6th Science

Variables Unit
  • 2.2 Lifeboat Inspection Lab

7th/8th Science

Earth Science
  • 3.1: Observing Grand Canyon Rock Samples

Today we are going to start looking at the Grand Canyon in a little more detail. We will look at Powell's method of collecting data and samples and try and duplicate that in this lab.

Variables Unit
  • Lifeboat Inspection Lab

7th/8th Science

Earth Science
  • Mid-Summative Exam

Today you will be taking the 2nd mid summative exam. First, you will write the test out on the sheet provided. This will serve as the "sloppy copy". Then we will go over to the computer lab and you will type out your test response. Remember to apply 6-trait writing to have a great product.

6th Grade Science

Variables Unit
  • Test Discussion
  • Lifeboat Investigation 1 & 2

Today, we will discuss the test yesterday. Then we will go into the lab and begin our investigation into Lifeboats. We will be working to improve measuring and observation skills as well as learning about capacity and bouyancy.

7th/8th Science

Earth Science
  • Finish organizing Grand Canyon Questions/Discuss
  • Crossword Puzzle
  • Mid-Summative Exam tomorrow

Today we are going to finish up organizing the questions. Your group will give a brief informal discussion of the way you categorized the questions. I will post these questions, so we can refer back to them from time to time. Hopefully, they will all be answered by the end of the unit.

After your group finishes organizing questions, come up and get a crossword

  • Deeper into the canyon

  • Virtual fieldtrip of the Grand Canyon

Monday, September 10, 2007

6th Science

Variables Unit
  • Testing the variable of length
  • Swinger Picture Graph Sheet

We will be testing the variable of length today and completing the Picture Graph Sheet. Also make sure that you are reviewing vocabulary and concepts on a regular basis.

7th/8th Science

Earth Science

  • Powell's Expedition Journal

  • Notes on Powell Expedition

Today we will be reading through Powell's Journal that he kept during his expedition through the Grand Canyon. While reading, you will be answering questions on your Notes on Powell Expedition Sheet. Then we will discuss your findings.

6th Grade Science

Variables Unit

  • Exploring Swingers

  • Word Wall

  • Content/Inquiry chart

Today we will be exploring variables using our swingers that we created yesterday. Since we will be working in the lab, you need to remember the safety rules and everybody will be wearing goggles.

7th/8th Science

Earth Science
  • Observation vs. Inference
  • Cube Activity

Today we will be trying to figure out what is on the bottom of cubes. You will be in groups of 3-4 and will need to use your observation and inferencing skills to guess what's on the bottom of the cubes. You will also need to gather evidence that supports your statement in order to convince me what's on the bottom.

6th Science

Variables

  • Explore "swingers"

  • Vocabulary- variable, experiment, pendulum

Today we are beginning a new unit called "Variables". In this unit we will be learning more about the nature of science and how to do science. We will begin by studying "swingers". A swinger is a simple pendulum.

1.1 Making Inferences

Today we will continue to learn about the Nature of Science through Earth Science. Observations and inferences are an important part of "doing science". Remember from our discussion last week that observations are made by using our senses, or extensions of our senses, (microscopes, telescopes, cameras, etc...) and inferences are the logical conclusions that we can make based upon those observations.

Bellringer: Look at the object on my table and make a list of observations and inferences.
